Has Derek Morrison got the best job in the world or what? He gets to travel around the country photographing the best mountain bikers on amazing trails then throws the whole lot into a beautifully designed calendar and retires to singletrack nirvana for another season.
This year Ride 2014: The Art of Riding features an impressive list of riders including Gabby Molloy (the cover star), Justin Leov, Anton Cooper, Cam Cole, Rosara Joseph, Louis Hamilton, Reece Potter and a bunch more.
The Adventure Media Group series of calendars has always featured athletes and this is a core part of Derek’s philosophy.

The Adventure Media Group series of calendars has always featured athletes and this is a core part of Derek’s philosophy.
“Our calendars are popular with both core and mainstream audiences so we like to promote the athletes of this sport. The more we grow the profile of local athletes the bigger the industry becomes. That’s better for everyone from local bike shops to clubs and ultimately the athletes themselves.”
Derek’s company, Adventure Media Group Ltd, has been producing the calendars since 2011 and sees no signs of them slowing down.
“Each year we sell more and more of them – they are big 400mm x 400mm wall calendars printed on beautiful paper. They are equally as at home on the wall of a doctor’s office as they are on the wall of a 15-year-old dirt jump rider. They inspire people to ride and that’s what we love about building them each year.”
One of the most memorable shoots for this calendar was with cover girl Gabby Molloy in the Whakarewarewa Forest in Rotorua.
“Normally I would cull at least 50% of my images in the first edit, but with Gabby’s shoot I ended up with about 95% keepers – she just looked so good on a bike, she could ride any line and she was always smiling. It was the first time I had shot with her and I came away thinking how she embodied the spirit of mountain biking: pure fun. It’s why we all start … she inspired me.”
