A few months ago, Ruth Negga was an unfamiliar face to most moviegoers. But now her stand out performance in the new film Loving has thrust her into the spotlight.
Since the film’s release the Ethiopian-Irish actress has graced the covers of vogue, nabbed an Oscar nomination and has been the name on everyone’s lips.
But it wasn’t the nomination for best actress that made this film so significant to Ruth. “Loving was a very special film,” explains the 35-year-old actress. “There are films that really, really land on you and mark you and I think this is one of those films for me.”

Ruth plays Mildred, one half of the real-life interatrial couple from 1960s America who fought against the law to be together. Up until then, it was illegal for white and black people to marry in Virginia and the couple were exiled from their home for nine years until they finally won their case.
“They changed the constitution,” declares Ruth.
“Hope is a key theme of this film, and she was a hopeful person. You’re drawn to those people as well, because they inspire hope in you, and I think she was very much the rock of her family, and for Richard. You want to orbit that.”
The civil rights struggles of Mildred, who died in 2008, and Richard, who lost his life in an accident in 1975, are not widely known, but now this film has not only made a star out of Ruth, but a vehicle for their heroic love story to be seen and heard.
