The story of one of our most iconic Kiwis is brought to life in the TV ONE epic Hillary. From his childhood in South Auckland, to the plane crash that killed his wife and daughter, Hillary is an in-depth look at the man that conquered more than just Mount Everest.
Sir Edmund Hillary was a bee-keeper, mountaineer, war veteran, explorer, philanthropist, husband, father, and the first person to ever reach the summit of Mount Everest.
Hillary stepped where no man had before, becoming a household name in New Zealand and around the world. His achievement wasn’t just a victory for Hillary and climbing partner Tenzing Norgay, it was a victory for New Zealand.
Hillary’s triumph helped to shape New Zealand’s national identity. A beekeeper from South Auckland, New Zealand – a small country on the corner of the world - had achieved the unachievable. In Hillary’s own words, he “knocked the bastard off”.
In six parts, Hillary portrays the life, loves and losses of one of the most famous Kiwis of all time.
Featuring a stellar line-up of Kiwi talent including Andrew Munro (The Kick) as Sir Edmund Hillary; Dean O’Gorman (The Hobbit series) as Hillary’s long-time climbing companion and friend, George Lowe; and Amy Usherwood (Shortland Street) as Ed’s wife, Lady Louise Hillary.
Starts Sunday August 21st on TV ONE and TVNZ OnDemand.
