To mark the centenary of the Gallipoli landings in World War 1, The Royal New Zealand Ballet is honoured to have collaborated with the New Zealand Army Band, and some of our most distinguished composers and choreographers to bring you a very special ballet, Salute.
They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
Laurence Binyon For The Fallen, September 1914
Salute is a light-hearted look at the cadets, who themselves had not yet been subject to the reality of the front lines. With four dance works, performed by 12 male dancers including one of the landmark dance works of the 20th century - Jiř? Kyli?n's Soldiers Mass. This stunning work was originally created for the Nederlands Dans Theatre in 1980, and became a sensation when it was first performed by the RNZB in 1998.
With further works by Andrew Simmons, himself a former RNZB dancer and Neil Ieremia, founder of Black Grace, Salute promises to be a show that will stay with you, long after you've left the theatre.
Salute opens in Wellington on 22 May, RadioLIVE has the chance for you and 3 friends, along with flights and accommodation, to be at the opening night in Wellington on the 22nd of May!
