What became Roxette’s biggest international single, The Look, started out as “just another song”. As the number-one hit, which propelled the Swedish pop duo into worldwide stardom, celebrates its 25th anniversary, guitarist Per Gessle reveals to the Weekly that the song does nothing for him now – except make him feel old!
“It’s interesting that music can survive, you know,” he says down the line from Europe. “We didn’t have the attitude of, ‘Let’s make it the biggest hit in the world.’ It was just an idea. I bought a new synthesizer and was learning how to programme it, so I wrote a song. The Look was unique because it was made in Stockholm by Swedish musicians, and it just didn’t sound like anything else at the time. There’s something in the sound or our voices maybe, it has great little hooks. It feels weird to hear it on the radio still!”
RoxetteCelebrating the milestone, Per and singer Marie Fredriksson are embarking on a World Tour this October. Following their 2011-2012 global adventure, which took them to more than 46 countries, the pair is looking to make good on a promise to Kiwi fans that missed seeing them the first time.

“We want to make up for last time,” he enthuses. “It’s terrible when you have to cancel and we were really unhappy, but nothing we could do sadly.”
