The event opens with Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture, which Mendelssohn wrote following a visit to Fingal’s Cave on the island of Staffa in the Hebrides, off the coast of Scotland. So great was the effect of that miracle of nature on Mendelssohn, that Wagner declared this overture “one of the most beautiful works of music”.
Following the overture, conductor, Professor Uwe Grodd, will invite pianist Matteo Napoli to join the orchestra to perform Chopin’s F Minor Piano Concerto. Written in 1829 when Chopin was only 19 years old, this most expressive romantic work was inspired by Chopin’s first love from his homeland, Poland. It is filled with an intense sense of longing and desire.
The concert’s second half features some of Richard Wagner’s most loved music.
