Halfway through this book I thought to myself, “man, I’m really loving this book. I wonder what else she’s written I need to read more.”, and then when I read the other titles I smiled – I have already read other books by this author and really enjoyed them!
Lisa Jewell, in my mind, is better than Marian Keyes and the likes. This is a ‘thinking girls’ chick lit. It’s easy to read, but the characters are really well developed, the story not quite guessable, the tone light (even when covering dark subjects like this novel does) but somehow still gutsy enough to feel not too ‘fluffy’. She is immensely enjoyable to read.
This novel covers the attack of a young girl one night at a neighbourhood party. The novel begins with this scene so I’m not giving anything away. We then we go back in time to discover the relationships and situations of the characters. And what a colourful cast they are! There’s something, or rather someone, in here for everyone.

There’s also more than one ‘mystery’ to solve and keep you entranced. This is a great technique and the revelations of their mysteries is slightly staggered too so you’re not kept guessing for too long – one of my pet hates!
One of the issues of a mystery or thriller type of novel can be the level of violence that is portrayed – this is very delicately handled in this novel and those with a week stomach for blood and gore can rest assured that this is handled with a delicate hand and is not a reason to discard this book from your ‘must read’ pile.
I stayed up, in front of the fire, sipping Baileys for four hours after my husband had gone to bed just to finish this book – and it was worth every minute. I can’t wait to read more of this author and really encourage you all to read this one, and if you love it read more of her work – she’s a star!
