A rabbit who has a big idea and, by belief in himself and perseverance, wins through is the hero in a book just published and about to be launched in Botany.
Elise De Silva, who has self-published Rabbit’s Big Idea will achieve a long-standing ambition to publish a children’s picture book when it is launched at Botany Library on Sunday.
The Cockle Bay woman describes the story as autobiographical. When Rabbit wants to transform a playground, his family tells him he is too small for such a big idea. So he locks the idea away, but then decides to have another go and takes the idea to the right people.

Mrs De Silva’s writing career has its origins in the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) which involved completing a 50,000 word story in November 2012. Her relationship with Botany Library was cemented when she attended a workshop there for people interested in the NaNoWriMo event.
Her long-standing drive to have a children’s picture book published goes back to when she read picture books to two small children of a family she lived with and was encouraged to write one of her own.
She joined a children’s writing critique group in Mount Eden where participants, some published authors, shared manuscripts. She quickly learned that the conventional route to being published was difficult because New Zealand publishers don’t generally take on new writers’ works.
Mrs De Silva decided not to let the book slip through her fingers but instead publish it herself.
Rabbit’s Big Idea, by Elise De Silva, will be launched at 2.30-4pm on November 22 at Botany Library, Botany Town Centre. RSVP to edspublishing@gmail.com. Mrs De Silva’s website, www.edspublishing.com.
