To Lawrie Metcalf and Roy Edwards, good gardens grows from the ground up!
In their new book – New Zealand Native Ground Cover Plants: A practical guide for gardeners and landscapers – the pair covers their topic admirably.
Roy – a lecturer in horticulture at Lincoln University – says the aim is to help gardeners select and care for native ground cover plants to create low-maintenance, sustainable gardens.
“[With this book] people will be able to plan, propagate plants and prepare areas to successfully establish and maintain New Zealand ground cover plants,” he says.
“It also covers what a ground cover plant is and tips for designing gardens. There is no other book on this topic and we hope that it encourages people to grow New Zealand native plants.”
Hasty, ill-informed choices aimed solely at easy-care can result in gardens that need to be removed a few years later; New Zealand Native Ground Cover Plants attempts to help gardeners avoid this all-too-common problem.
Both Roy and his co-author have penned an impressive range of works over the years, including photographic and identification guides, as well as books on the cultivation and propagation of native plants.
