In 1996 two great New Zealand music institutions joined forces to produce a unique project. ENZSO was an album of classic Split Enz songs arranged by former Split Enz keyboardist and sound engineer Eddie Rayner.
The music was performed by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, with members of the original band and special guests providing vocals.
The album went on to sell multi platinum across New Zealand & Australia, spawning highly successful national tours in both countries with around 250,000 fans attending the historic shows.
The success of the original album was followed in 1998 by ENZSO 2.
On April 1 st 2016 the iconic New Zealand ENZSO project will celebrate 20 years. To mark this historic occasion ENZSO creator Eddie Rayner has compiled the finest musical moments from the two original ENZSO albums on a brand new 20 th anniversary edition. The new package will also feature never before seen photos from the original national tour and recording sessions.
“In 1996, a vestige over youthful over-confidence led me to believe that I could write arrangements of Split Enz songs for full orchestra and choir. Well, history tells the story, and EnzSo sprung to life with the encouragement of the Finns, my family, and many others including conductor Peter Scholes, promoter Ian Magan and Sony's Paul Ellis who always held the faith. The entire NZSO (92-piece), 30 piece choir and featured singers hit the road throughout NZ, and we had sellout theatres and a hit record! Same thing happened in Australia, but with the Adelaide Symphony.
Back then, I always got a kick out of hearing the NZSO playing my 'Poor Boy' arrangement on the radio, with Dave Dobbyn's vocal soaring over the wobbly, drummerless feel. And standing in amongst the orchestra while they were practicing 'Time For a Change' or 'Dirty Creature' was truly mind-blowing. These days, it still delights me when a young musician says...'Did you do EnzSo? I grew up with that record-it's my parents favourite!'” – Eddie Rayner
