For more than half a century, Keith Sorrenson – one of New Zealand’s leading historians and himself of mixed Māori and Pākehā descent – has dived deeper than anyone into the story of two peoples in New Zealand. In this new book, Sorrenson brings together his major writing from the last 56 years into a powerful whole – covering topics from the origins of Māori (and Pākehā ideas about those origins), through land purchases and the King Movement of the 19th Century, to 20th Century politics and the workings of the Waitangi Tribunal. Throughout his career, Sorrenson has been concerned with the international context of New Zealand history while also attempting to understand and explain Māori conceptions and Pākehā ideas from the inside. And he has been determined to tell the real story of Māori land losses and their political responses as, in the face of Pākehā colonisation, they became a minority in their own country. Ko te Whenua te Utu/ Land is the Price is a powerful history of Māori and Pākehā in New Zealand.
The author
MPK Sorrenson (Ngati Pukenga, Pākehā) began as a junior lecturer in the University of Auckland history department in 1958 and completed a DPhil at Oxford. He returned to Auckland in 1964, where he taught for the next 31 years. He was president of CARE in the 1970s and was a leading member of the Waitangi Tribunal for 25 years. His books include Māori Origins and Migrations (1979) and the three-volume work Na To Hoa Aroha, From Your Dear Friend: The Correspondence between Sir Apirana Ngata and Sir Peter Buck, 1925–1950 (1986, 1987, 1988), both of which have recently been launched as e-books by Auckland University Press.

Rooted in neuroscience, psychology and evolutionary biology, but written with Corballis’ signature wit and wisdom, The Wandering Mind takes us into the world of the “default-mode network” to tackle the big questions: What do rats dream about? In 1946 a group of students and idealists got together to realise their visions for a modern city. Over the following half century, the Architectural Centre they founded helped to shape the possibilities of modern life in urban New Zealand and profoundly influenced the remaking of Wellington.
More than an association of architects, the Centre wrote manifestos, furthered education, published Design Review magazine, hosted modernist exhibitions in its gallery, staged an audacious campaign for political influence called “The Project”, and fought for better planning and design and better built environments in Wellington. Its members also constructed a demonstration house, but "planning" was the battle-cry.
Vertical Living charts these activists and their projects, as well as offering a history of urban Wellington from the 1940s to the 1990s and beyond. The book reminds us that, in modernist ideology, architecture and urban planning went hand-in-hand with visual and craft arts, and with graphic and industrial design. In recovering the multi-disciplinary history, politics and planning of the Architectural Centre, Gatley and Walker begin writing the city back into the history of architecture in this country.
Authors
Julia Gatley is a senior lecturer in the University of Auckland's School of Architecture and Planning. She is the author of Athfield Architects (2012) and editor of Group Architects: Towards a New Zealand Architecture (2010) and Long Live the Modern: New Zealand’s New Architecture, 1904–1984 (2008).
Paul Walker is a professor of architecture at the University of Melbourne. He is co-author, with Justine Clark, of Looking for the Local: Architecture and the New Zealand Modern (2000). Recent publications include chapters in The Sage Handbook of Architectural Theory (2012); Neo-Avant-garde and Postmodern: Postwar Architecture in Britain and Beyond (2010); and Colonial Modernities (2007).
Vertical Living: The Architectural Centre and the Remaking of Wellington includes contributions from curator and art historian Damian Skinner and from Justine Clark, an independent architectural editor, writer and critic.

On November 9, 2008, near Kiribati in the Pacific, a Korean ship came alongside Tai Ching 21. The Taiwan-flagged fishing boat was eerily silent. Three life rafts were missing, along with all 29 of the Taiwanese officers and Chinese, Indonesian and Filipino crew. A quest to discover the men's identities led journalist Michael Field into a dark world of foreign-flagged vessels fishing the waters of New Zealand, other Pacific nations, and the Southern Ocean. He uncovered brutality, misery and death, and impending ecological disaster – the destruction of the last great southern schools of fish.
With University of Auckland Business School researchers Dr Christina Stringer and Glenn Simmons, he forced the New Zealand government to take action to put an end to the illegal fishing practices of these vessels and the appalling working conditions of their crews.
In The Catch: How fishing companies reinvented slavery and plunder the oceans, Field documents the disturbing findings that prompted a Ministerial enquiry and new legislation requiring all foreign charter vessels to operate under New Zealand jurisdiction.
Author
Michael Field has been a newspaper and agency reporter for 35 years, mostly covering the South Pacific. A former Agence France-Presse correspondent, he now reports for Fairfax Media and has been a commentator on Radio New Zealand National's Nine to Noon programme for over a decade. His previous books include a landmark study of Samoa's independence movement, the Mau, which led New Zealand to formally apologise, and an account of Fiji's coups.

Subtitled “Rebuilding a just society in New Zealand”, Beyond the Free Market is a searching analysis of the changes wrought by market-based economics in this country over the past 30 years. It presents strategies to enable us to re-establish a society based on more equal access to resources.

A steadfast refusal to admit that pure free-market theory is flawed
A propensity to believe that misfortunes such as unemployment, financial hardship, poverty, and even ill health, are somehow a person's own fault
A dismal perception of public good and of concepts such as altruism, inclusiveness, and collective responsibility
Dismissal of the fact that a free-market economy has no inbuilt mechanism to protect the environment or sustain natural resources
A profound inability to comprehend the inherent dignity which is the right of all human beings
"The chapters in this book point to the respects in which the values of the free market must be rejected," says Sir Edmund Thomas in the forward. "Certainly, capitalism is capable of adjustment. Universal franchise, the growth of a propertied middle class and the emergence of the welfare state are notable manifestations of this capacity. Chellie Spiller is a Lecturer in the University of Auckland Business School's Department of Management and International Business. She was a Fulbright senior scholar at the Harvard Kennedy School and the University of Arizona, and is the recipient of several New Zealand awards, including a 2011 Dame Mira Sz?szy Māori Alumni Award.

At the Margin of Empire illuminates the early history of New Zealand through the life of one man: John Webster. Born in Scotland in 1818, Webster came to New Zealand via Australia when he was 23. He then spent most of his life in Hokianga. At the Margin of Empire charts his colourful experiences carving out a fortune as the region's leading timber trader and cultivating connections with the notable figures of the day – both Māori and Pākehā. Webster was a friend of Frederick Maning and was visited by George Grey, Richard Seddon, and other colonial luminaries. He fought alongside Tāmati Wāka Nene in the Northern War, married one of Nene's relatives, and built up his kauri-timber business through trade with local chiefs. Through his daily interactions, Ashton argues, Webster helped shift the balance of power in the north – the credit that he extended to his customers and kin saw them selling land to pay debts, helping to push Māori into economic dependence.
In telling the story of John Webster's long and eventful life, this biography also explores the wider transformation of relationships between Māori and Pākehā during the nineteenth century. It is an intimate and revealing account of life in early New Zealand.
Author
After a career as a technical writer and editor, Jennifer Ashton graduated from the University of Auckland history department with a PhD in 2012. Her doctoral thesis was placed on the Dean's List and won a Post-Doctoral Award from the Kate Edger Educational Charitable Trust.

First published in 1986, The New Zealand Wars reshaped our understanding of the "bitter and bloody struggles" between Māori and Pākehā in the New Zealand Wars. Revealing the enormous tactical and military skill of Māori, and the inability of “Victorian interpretation" to acknowledge those qualities, Belich's book offered a very different account of the conflict.
In Belich's view, Māori won the Northern War and stalemated the British in the Taranaki War of 1860-61 only to be defeated by 18,000 British troops in the Waikato War of 1863-64. The secret of effective Māori resistance was an innovative military system, the modern pā: a trench-and-bunker fortification of a sophistication not achieved in Europe until 1915.
Belich's larger argument about the impact of historical interpretation still resonates today.
Author
James Belich is the author of numerous books, including Making Peoples (1996), Paradise Reforged (2001) and Replenishing the Earth (2009). Belich is currently Beit Professor of Imperial and Commonwealth History at Oxford University and Director of the Oxford Centre for Global History.

But above all it is a story of wing forwards and fullbacks, of Don Clarke and Jonah Lomu, of the Log of Wood and Charlie Saxton’s ABC, of supporters in the grandstand and crackling radios at 2am.
Based on extensive research in public and private archives and newspapers, and illustrated with many rare photographs and ephemera, this book is the defining history of rugby in a land that has made the game its own.
Author
Ron Palenski is among the most respected authorities on the history of sport in New Zealand. He has written numerous books, among them a scholarly study, The Making of New Zealanders, which firmly placed rugby as a marker in national identity.
